“You girls are late,” Paula said as Kylie and Starshine walked into the change room. It sounded like a casual, offhand comment.

Alyssa seemed unduly excited about the issue. “Late, late, late!” she said, jumping in their path and wagging her finger at them. “Don’t you take this job seriously at all?”

Kylie rolled her eyes. “Lay off it, A. You’re annoying.”

Instead of getting offended, Alyssa raised her eyebrows and planted her hands on her hips. “I might be annoying, but you two are late! Together! Where were you?”

Kylie glanced at Starshine, suddenly less eager to tell the girls about their hike. “Nowhere,” she said.

Kylie headed for her locker, and Starshine went to hers across the room. Alyssa looked from one to the other as if deciding which to follow, eventually standing next to Kylie. She was several inches shorter, which made her an irritating presence around the height of Kylie’s nose.

Alyssa continue to pester Kylie as she changed. “Where’s nowhere?”

“Fine, we went for a hike and got pizza.”

Now they had everyone’s attention. “A hike and pizza?” Alyssa asked. “That sounds… romantic.”

“You two have been hanging out a lot,” Chloe said softly.

“Have they?” Paula asked. “I didn’t notice.”

Chloe’s voice grew louder. “Yeah, they both skipped the party the other night.”

“And they’ve been talking a lot, sometimes outside,” Alyssa added. She clapped her hands together. “Romance is in the air!”

Kylie stared into her locker, looking at the pile of clothes and shoes. She wished she could see how Starshine looked right now. While she knew she wanted romance to be in the air, she needed to see Starshine’s reaction before she could comment.

“They’re totally seeing each other,” Paula said with amusement. “Kylie, wow, you move fast. She just had a break-up!”

“Nothing is happening between us, ladies,” Starshine said.

Something had happened… but Kylie had to go along with how Starshine wanted to portray this. If she didn’t want the others to know about their night together, that was fair. After all, they weren’t going to hook up again. It had been a one-time thing, and she had to stop hoping that it would lead to more.

She turned slowly, regretfully, and went along with Starshine’s story. “You have this all wrong. We’re friends, nothing more.”

“I don’t know about that,” Paula said. “Look at them. They look pretty guilty.”

Paula had always been the one to make the others settle down when they acted up. Now she was acting just as bad as the rest of them.

“We’re not,” Kylie said.

“I’ve seen her looking at Starshine,” Alyssa said to Paula.

“Actually, I’ve seen Starshine looking at Kylie,” Paula responded.

Kylie grimaced, wishing they would all just cut it out. She definitely had given Starshine a glance or two over time. How could she not? And she wasn’t surprised that Starshine would have done the same to her. She already knew there was attraction there. But Starshine didn’t want this to go any further.

This could have been a happy moment for the two of them if they had been on their way to getting together, like they should have been.
